My story:
Why does helping people cure
head lice mean so much to me?
When I was about 26 years old my head started itching like mad. I did not know what it was. I never suspected head lice.
I had never seen it,
nor knew nothing about it.
I never had head lice as a
child. In fact, I recall looking at
those strangers ( women in white coats) who came to your elementary school and inspected our heads for head lice with sticks, and
thought to myself, what a
horrible, lousy job they had!
My father told me to use
Head and Shoulders or Sensen Blue for itching as it worked for him. That did
not work. Many months later somehow I discovered that my itching was because I
had head lice!
I went to the pharmacy and tried the over the counter pesticides, and used the
Lindane. No matter what poison I put on my head, it would not go away. I had to
wear my hair up in a hat as I was terrified that I would give it others.
Nothing I tried worked.
I was doing work as a part-time Nanny at the time and I was terribly worried
that I would give the children head lice.
They had Afro-American hair so I was doubly worried.
I asked my mother to help me and she stepped back in horror and said "No...she did not know how." I was all alone in my struggle with head lice. I felt such shame about having
the bugs that I did not ask at any of the health food stores if they had anything that
might work. I knew I could shave my head but I was in a custody battle with my son’s
father, and I believed that appearing before a judge with a shaved head or wearing a wig or bandana would not serve me well.
Eventually, I went into a doctor’s office and he told me what they used in
China. It was very poisonous, likely
cancer-causing and gave me the worst dandruff I had ever had. I was raining
snow for months and months.
That was the first
experience with head lice.
The second time with head lice was still awful but that second time I had love
and a family. Now there was myself with lice but also my son, my boyfriend, his
ex-girlfriend, and two young girls. It
took four months or so trying to cure the girls and two women.
We used
pesticides on the adults without success. We tried margarine ( bad idea),
mayonnaise, even a strong mix or myrrh and cayenne and water. That failed too.
It took four months of nitpicking
efforts to clear us of lice.
Eventually, I found an affordable, safe technological solution
and I realized that millions of people needed help just like me to cure head lice. So, off I began helping people cure head lice.
I enjoy helping people very much.
I started LiceBusters Canada ( www.liceBusters.ca) in 1997.
